I was really impressed when I first saw a laptop running the Snapdragon 835 – a CPU commonly used in high-end phones.

Ditching the usual Intel chips for something from Qualcomm allows these laptops to not only be ridiculously thin and light, but also pack seriously drool-worthy battery life.
Lenovo first teased the Miix 630 during the Qualcomm Summit late last year, but we’ve finally got our hands on one at CES 2018.

Lenovo Miix 630 release date and price

Prices for the Miix 630 will start at $799 when it’s released in Q2, but we don’t have any UK-specific pricing at this stage.

Lenovo Miix 630 – Design and features

Like every other Microsoft Surface Pro clone, the Miix 630 feels very familiar. The clicky keyboard clips onto the 12.3-inch WUXGA+ screen with magnets, and a kickstand can be found on the back. Unlike the Surface Pro, though, both the keyboard and a stylus are included in the box.

During my short time with the device, I found the screen to be bright and colourful; in fact, the whole package felt well built. The edges of the display are super-sharp, however, which makes it far from ideal in the hands when it’s undocked from the keyboard.
There’s a single USB-C port on the side for data and charging, 4 or 8GB RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage. Lenovo has added in a Windows Hello-compatible camera for easy unlocking of the device with your face.
All the above specs are par for the course, but it’s really the Snapdragon 835 mobile platform inside the device that makes this hybrid genuinely interesting. Lenovo is claiming you’ll get 20 hours of battery life from a single charge, and there’s LTE support right out of the box. Whether this is the reality remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an exciting prospect.

Like the other Snapdragon 835 laptops, the Miix 630 comes with Windows 10 S, but you’ll be able to update it to full-fat Windows 10 Pro for free.

First impressions

The design doesn’t do much to excite the senses, but the idea of the Miix 630 running on the Snapdragon 835 platform does. The thought of 20 hours of battery life and LTE support is exciting; and I can’t wait to actually use one of these devices for an extended period of time.
